A pair of 5.5in Doulton Lambeth beakers, one of them signed by one of the most inventive Doulton designers of the late 19th century - Frank Butler.
The beakers have very different marks. Both have the impressed Doulton Lambeth mark. The earlier one (1882) has, apart from the date, only the incised monogram of Mary Aitken. The other has the incised monograms of Frank Butler and Ernest Bishop, the date (1883) and the design number of Frank Butler - 461. Both have silver-plated rims. The beakers weighs 638g.
The beakers are in excellent condition, without chips, cracks or restroation. The diameter of the beakers varies, and the silver plated rims appear to have been 'off-the-shelf' rims, fitted to hand -made beakers. The result is that the fit of the rims to the beakers is not perfect. One rim has a couple of worn areas where the copper underneath the silver shows.
