This pretty incised jug is a very early Doulton Lambeth item. Made in 1872, it was produced within about 5 years of the commencement of decorative wares at Doultons. Emily Edwards died shortly after starting at Doultons in 1871, and her works are now very rare.
The jug has the incised monogram of Emily J Edwards, the Doulton Lambeth impressed mark and the date 1872 underneath. All the decoration is incised, with leaves in cobalt blue and a pale olive green.
The jug is in mint condition, with no cracks, chips, crazing, restoration or scratches. Two white beads are missing, but their absence must date from manufacturing time as the spaces have been glazed over. Two minute 'nicks' in the rim, similarly are glazed over.
