An early (1879) 7" Doulton Lambeth stoneware vase in superb condition signed by both designer (Bessie Youatt) and ceramic artist (Alice Groom).
This stoneware vase dates from the period when Doulton at Lambeth did not have the range of glazes and pigments that they had later on. Page 43 of Desmond Eyles' 'The Doulton Lambeth Wares' shows a variety of monochrome or near-monochrome products. Later, the available colours became more varied and three of Bessie Youatt's multicoloured works are shown on p89.
The vase has the impressed Doulton Lambeth mark, together with the incised monograms of Bessie Youatt, and Alice Groom. It also has the date and Bessie Youatt's opus number, 764.
The vase is in totally original mint condition, with no cracks, chips or scratches. Two of the prunts around the girth have been replaced, (see photo) but as they are perfect replicas of the original ones, one can assume that they were 'factory fitted' after the first firing.
