This impressive pair of 12" (30cm) 1884 Silicon ware vases by Elizabeth Small show a strong resemblance to the work of Eliza Simmance and Frank Butler, with swirling designs outlined in gold.
Elizabeth M Small worked at Doulton Lambeth only from 1879, to 1884, the year that these vases were made. In 1884 she won a Bronze Medal for her work at the International Health Exhibition. The design is in blue, white and dark grey, on a mid grey background. Every element of design is outlined with gold lining. The vases are unglazed.
Underneath, the vases have the Doulton Lambeth Silicon Mark, the date 1884, the mongram of Elizabeth Small and the marks of two unknown assistants 'ML' and 'OB'.
The vases are in excellent condition, without any chips, cracks or restoration. They have certain very feint incised lines that appear to be construction lines for the set-out of the design.
