A very rare Royal Doulton 'Natural Foliage Ware' stoneware jardiniere on pedestal dating from the early 20th century. The overall height is 95cm (38in).
A superb example of Natural Foliage Ware with a green background: much of the output is less striking as it had a rust brown background. Doulton made these from 1884, having been first announced in that year in the Gardeners' Chronicle. The leaves are pressed into the soft clay, carefully removed and the item is then fired and the coloured pigments and glazes are then added. The jardiniere has the incised monogram of Rosina Brown who worked at Doultons from 1875-1905. It also has the impressed mark of Ellen Palmer who worked at Doultons from 1879-1910. This dates the pedestal as being between 1902, when Doulton became 'Royal' Doulton and 1905 when Rosina Brown finished.
