Doulton Lambeth chine Silicon ware vase with gilt, possibly Moorish decoration, by Eliza Simmance. The vase probably dates from the 1880s.
This vase by Eliza Simmance probably dates from the 1880s. The Doulton Lambeth Silicon mark underneath does not have the word 'England' added, dating the vase to pre-1891. Apart from the incised monogram of Eliza Simmance, it has the monograms of Susanna Sanderson and two other assistants. As Ellen Smith, one of the assistants, started at Doultons in 1882, we can date the vase fairly accurately to 1882-1891. Eliza Simmance, one of Doulton's most important designers, gets pages of illustration and text in Desmond Eyles' 'The Doulton Lambeth Wares'. Pages 95-99 show her glazed ware, and pages 167-169 show her Silicon designs, similar to this vase.
The vase in in perfect condition with no chips, cracks, crazing or restoration.
