Eliza Simmance goes Art Nouveau with a pair of large impressive vases. On a painting, the overall applied layer of glaze would be called ‘scumbling’. With ceramic glazes, it is another expression of her outstanding ability to handle this difficult medium.
The pair of 14.5in (36cm) vases have the Royal Doulton impressed mark. They are signed in monogram by Eliza Simmance and numbered 31 by her. They carry the coded date (g) for 1906 and are also signed by Eliza Simmance’s assistant Emily Partington. The vases weigh 1838 and 2189g.
