In 1884, the date of this vase, most designers were using hard contrasting coloured glazes with sharp incised patterns. Here we have a combination of muted and harmonious colours showing with a contoured surface, a sensitivity not often seen at the time.
The 8in (20cm) vase has the impressed Doulton Lambeth mark with the date of 1884. It is signed in monogram by William Parker and numbered 271 by him. It is also signed by his assistant Harriet E Hibbutt. The vase weighs 664g.
The vase is in exceptional condition, with no chips, cracks or crazing. It does however display a 2cm feint ‘setting out’ mark on one side, which does not detract from the appearance of the vase.
