Frank Butler was never afraid of innovation. At a time when most other designers at Doultons were conforming with the ‘norm’ and producing incised and elaborate designs in a variety of colours, Frank Butler produced this charming little jug with just two strong colours and tubelining. The ‘raised’ flower heads are produced by pushing the clay out from the inside by use of the thumb. The 6.75in (17cm) Doulton Lambeth jug has the impressed Doulton Lambeth mark incorporating the word ‘ENGAND’, dating the manufacture of the jug to the period 1892-1902. It is signed in monogram by Frank Butler and his assistant, Bessie Newbery. It is numbered by Frank Butler - 3131. The jug weighs 513g.
The jug is in mint condition, with no chips, cracks or restorations. One side of the jug is a deeper tone of cream due to its position in the kiln.
