We get used to Eliza Simmance in her first couple of decades at Doultons turning out only incised designs. This pair of pâte-sur-pâte vases is a welcome change, showing the versatility of the great lady. In the same condition as they left the kiln, they are an opportunity to enhance and extend any collection of her work.
A pair of pâte-sur-pâte Doulton Lambeth 10.5in (26cm) vases with the impressed Doulton Lambeth mark and the date 1883. They are signed and numbered (213 & 214) by Eliza Simmance and also signed in monogram by her assistant, Mary Aitken. The vases weigh in total 1526g.
The vases are in 100% mint condition. There are a few discontinuities in the pâte-sur-pâte designs caused by kiln shrinkage and one vase shows a slight roughness to its base rim, cause by kiln grit.
