A 'fun' item! The matchholder is a self-advertising item to promote Doulton's own products. It is inscribed on 3 panels, "DOULTON & Co Ltd", "LONDON & BIRMINGHAM" and "CRUCIBLE MANUFACTURERS". It could also be used as an ashtray.It was made by Maud Bowden, one of the very finest of Doulton's decorators.
The match holder has the impressed Royal Doulton mark with crown and lion, the incised monogram of Maud Bowden and weighs 392g.
The match holder is in perfecr condition. It had a miniscule chip to the upper rim (see photos), which has been professionally and perfectly restored.
