This charming little (6.5in /16cm) Doulton Lambeth stoneware jug, by one of Doultons finest designers, Eliza Simmance, dates from 1878. The date underneath and that of the London hallmarked silver rim (by Brockwell & Sons) are the same.
The vase is an enigma: it has Eliza Simmance‘s monogram on the outside. This is a serious breach of normal protocol, whereby only George Tinworth was allowed such a privilege. She also signed in monogram underneath. The jug also has the monogram of Eliza Simmances' assistant, Harriet Hibbutt, the Doulton Lambeth impressed rosette, the date 1878, and Simmance’s design number 393. The jug weighs 634g.
